    1930’s – Robert Johnson recorded what might be the most influential group of songs in the history of blues music.
    1940’s – Muddy Waters was “discovered” on Stovall’s Plantation by Alan Lomax.
    1980’s – Resurgence of blues music led by Buddy Guy and Stevie Ray Vaughan among others.

    1912 – WC Handy publishes Memphis BLues (first ‘known’ blues song) … Thanks Martin Couch for the info!

    1920 – Mamie Smith records “Crazy Blues” – first blues song recorded.

    1950’s – Black and white musicians break the color barrier with another blues influenced form of music – Rock-n-Roll

    The 1960’s was the beginning of the mainstreaming of the blues, mainly because of the British invasion was basically based on blues music.

    50s were the high water mark of the Chicago blues — Muddy, Wolf, Little Walter, Bo Diddley, John Lee Hooker, Roosevelt Sykes, Otis Spann, lots of other great players who mainly came up from the Mississippi Delta. These guys developed the ELECTRIC guitar style, as well as the amplified harmonica.

    30s were when the original Delta blues got on record — Charlie Patton, Son House, Robert Johnson, Skip James. Johnson was to appear at Carnegie Hall as part of John Hammond’s Spirituals to Swing show, but couldn’t make the date.

    30s were also the time of the classic women blues singers, Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Victoria Spivey, Louise Bogan — mostly piano rather than guitar driven.

    40s? BB King said he didn’t really learn to play the blues until he was in the Army…

    1900’s the first written records of blues music appear. many of it’s backgrounds (spiritual, folk, worksongs) can still be clearly identified in the music.
    1930’s The era of the travelling bluesmen this is the time of the bluesmen that travel the roads roaming from town to town through the mississippi delta This is the period of the delta blues usually performed by a single performer or a small band using accoustic instruments.
    1940’s-1950’s The city days. Blues moved out of the country and into the city most famous city for this is chicago but also New Orleans and Memphis got there share of performers. Bands got larger and electric guitars and amps finally saw the light of day as the classic blues was transformed into modern music that would give birth to rock and roll, rock,…
