by M. Turner CTMentertainment Replacing Kirk Whalum as touring saxophonist for Luther Vandross, Houston Texas’ Kyle Turner, bandmates Kerry Wilkins, TJ Jenkins, & Allen Mosely made way to Austin to launch The KYLE TURNER BAND, later named KYLE TURNER & STANDING ROOM ONLY. Local r&b singer Rayvon Foster recommended _e check the band out when the drum position came available. Two songs into the audition the band took a moment to discuss and the rest is now local Austin jazz/blues history. KT & SRO became well known for their blend of high energy fusion; r&b pop, rock and jazz influenced instrumentals, causing nightly sidewalk congestion outside the small restaurant. Located on Austin’s Historic 6th street near the Trinity intersection, Kyle Turner & Standing Room Only held residency in Austin’s last African-American owned jazz-restaurant, CATFISH STATION, where UT student / aspiring actor Matthew McConaghey worked as a waiter before discovering his destiny. The band went on to open for Natalie Cole, Najee, Kirk Whalum, Grover Washington Jr., Kim Waters, Paul Jackson Jr, Bobby Lyle, Charles Neville, Peabo Bryson, Marion Meadows, Spyro Gyra, Confunkshun, & many more contemporary jazz r&b artists.

Paul Butterfield has put his own stamp to Blues history which begins back in 60s.Here is a clip with The Band from The Last Waltz and performs Mystery Train.Enjoy !!! PS:for the history the song was written by Junior Parker and Sam Phillips.Junior had a band at 1953 called Little Junior’s Blue Flames and Sam was the record producer. The song has this dynamic to feel the train both from harmonica and lyrics.Parker sung and here Paul too: “Train arrive, sixteen coaches long. Train arrive sixteen coaches long. Well, that long black train carries my baby home.” A wonderful song like a trip.Presented under fair use for educational purposes, materials all rights reserved by the original owners.

Up in the morning and out to school
The teacher is teaching the golden rule
American history and practical maths
Study hard, hoping to pass
Working your fingers right down to the bone
The guy behind you won’t leave you alone

Ring ring goes the bell
The cook in the kitchen is ready to sell
But you’ll be lucky to find your seat
You’re fortunate if you got time to eat
Back in the classroom, open your books
The teacher don’t know how mean she looks

Hail, Hail rock ‘n’ roll, Hail, Hail rock ‘n’ roll
Hail, Hail rock ‘n’ roll, Hail, Hail rock ‘n’ roll
Hail, Hail rock ‘n’ roll, Hail, Hail rock ‘n’ roll

Soon as 3 o’clock goes around
You finally lay your burden down
Throw down your books and outta of your seat
You go down the hallway and into the street
And you’re trying to forget justwhere you been
You find a juke joint, you go in

You drop the coin right into the slot
You gotta hear something that’s really hot
With the one you love you’re ma

I first saw this band while attending UC Berkeley at the weekly Monday night open mic jams that Steve Gannon led for over 15 years (I think?). Sadly, the band doesn’t play there anymore and I’ve lost touch with them. Here, the band is playing one of Kelvin’s specialties. I wish I had gotten more footage. At the time, …
