The blue jackets were a young team founded in 2000 but unfortunately does not qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs until the year of 2009. In year 1978 Cleveland and Barons left Ohio and nobody is expecting that it would take 22 long years before another NHL team would be welcomed in the state. It was only on year 1997 when the NHL declared that there will be a new franchise for the Columbus; because of the May 31 announcements from the Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company that says that they will foot the bill for a new $150-million arena in Columbus.

The logo of the blue jackets originated in Ohio’s rich Civil War history and this would mean the patriotism, and pride of Ohio. In the term of service of President Abraham Lincoln he asked Ohio to have ten regiments at the outbreaks of the civil war and they managed to form a 23 volunteer infantry regiments.

The logo of the blue jackets is a version of the flag of Ohio that is styled and was used in the sweaters sport with crossed hockey sticks. This is also where Stinger is created, the official team mascot who is a 6 footer and bright green in color. Stinger can be seen walking along the audience during the games and skating on the ice between the games and wearing a team jersey.

Due to public demand, the Blue jackets organization comes up with a hand-made replica of an 1867 Napoleon cannon and they put it in the Nationwide Arena. Every time the team scores a home goal this cannon would salute. It was certainly amazing that the cannon fired no less than 164 times.

For the Blue Jacket’s fan the cannon has been a part of the culture. The cannon would normally produce a .75oz concussion explosive that is placed above the rink. It also bring great feeling for the fans whenever they hear the music after the cannon which is the For Those About to Rock (We salute you).

The Blue Jackets got their first Stanley Cup Playoff in year 2009 by defeating the Chicago team. The team had made their advantage during the year of 2008 especially when they get Raffi Torres in trade for Gilbert Brule and exchanging Nikolai Zherdey and Dan Fritsche to the New York Rangers in exchange for Fedor Tyutin and Christian Backman. The Blue Jackets also receive Antoine Vermette from the Ottawa Senators in trade for Pascal Leclaire.

Columbus has had a history of skilled and specialized hockey back in 1966. Until Columbus Blue Jackets were formed as Columbus NHL didn’t make a way in.
Columbus has had a history of professional hockey dating back to 1966. But the NHL did not make an entrance until the Columbus Blue Jackets were formed as Columbus, Ohio landed a National Hockey League extension franchise in the summer of 1997. It was winter of 1997 when John McConnell owner of the team announced the team name. Name Blue Jacket pays respect to Ohio’s offerings to American history. Ohio made major contributions to the Union Army during Civil War. Many of the union soldiers’ uniforms were manufactured in Columbus. Logo of the team was a n insect that is well known for hard work and originality that community wanted to emphasize. Dough MacLean former Florida Panthers coach was signed as a general manager of Blue Jackets and later in 1998 broke ground for Nationwide Arena, future home of Blue Jackets.
In 1999 building of the arena was in full swing, the Blue Jackets continued to fill in their front office positions. They signed for the Syracuse Crush of the American Hockey League as their trivial league associate team.
Columbus played against Chicago Blackhawk’s as their NHL debut on October 7, 2000. Bruce Gardiner
Columbus Blue Jackets made their NHL debut on October 7, 2000, against division rivals Chicago Blackhawk’s. Bruce Gardiner scored the first ever usual seasonal goal in team history but the Blue Jackets lost that game by 5-3. They defeated Calgary Flames and made their first win with a 3-2 score few days later. First season for Black Jackets was not a great season because they were at the bottom of the Central division with 28-39-9-6 record for 71 points. They picked Pascal Leclaire as one of their eleven picks. NHL initial entry draft helped them to establish their team as it helped in selection.
Second season for them featured a distinctive Dave King team, hard working with a desire for defensive play. The young franchise had a great loss within the community that many explained as a freak accident. The thirteen year old Brittanie Cecil died in result of an injury against the Calgary Flames at Nationwide Arena. He was recorded as the first fan casualty in NHL’s 85 year history and resulted in execution of ‘protective nets’ in all arenas next year. Second season was ended in recession as they had lesser wins and points from their initial contests with a 22-47-8-5 record for 57 points.
Rick Nash London Knights start prospect was signed by Blue Jackets in the 2002 initial draft. He came into the NHL when he was eighteen year old and score 39 points in 74 games. Blue Jackets had a poor start and managed to get second last place in Western Conference for them. Team had only one coach since it started league in 2000 and that was Dave King. Doug Maclean was the president and general manager and he offered his services as team’s temporary coach.
