Has it always been a dream of yours to be able to play a musical instrument? Are you interested in learning how to play a certain style of guitar playing called the blues? Up until recently, it was difficult to find qualified instructors who could teach in this style of music. As the Internet continues to grow, it is now possible to find blues guitar lessons. Your best bet in learning how to play the guitar in this style would actually be through online instruction.

Blues music can be traced to the early 20th century, deep southern section of the United States. Blues has its origins with the spiritual chants, work songs and ballads associated with the African-American community. Blue music, like jazz is characterized by its specific chord progression within the compositions. The “12 bar” is the most common of these chord progressions found in blues music. The actual “blue note” within the progression is played or sung slightly flattened, (or “bent”) in relation to the pitch of the major scale.

So, as you can tell blues guitar music would be quite different from other styles: acoustic rock, country, or even classical guitar. If you desire to become proficient in playing the blues, seeking the right instruction is paramount to your eventual success. Not every guitar instructor can play, let alone even understand the blues. Would you want to learn the blues guitar from some teacher who is only familiar with folk guitar? Only a certified blues guitar instructor would be able to teach you the instrument in this style.

Interactive music programs can now be found on the internet. The problem is that not all sites can even offer blues guitar lessons. It is why you definitely need to take your time and do the research before you commit even one penny for lessons. Find an online music program that specifically states that blues guitar lessons are offered. Read the testimonials of students who have successfully been taught how to play in the blues style. The site’s instructors must be certified at both playing the instrument well, and in teaching students how to play in this particular style of guitar. Remember, blues is not the same as rock, or folk guitar. Only blues guitar would include instruction related to the fundamental melodic, chord progression, and “licks” associated with this genre. With the proper instruction, only then would you progress and eventually master the instrument.

Since you have an interest in blues guitar, you undoubtedly know of one of the most famous 20th century musicians who played the instrument: B.B. King. King’s most popular and well-known song is entitled: “The Thrill is Gone”, which was a Grammy-award winning composition. This song once simultaneously topped both the pop and R & B charts, back in the late 1950’s. You may also know of the group “Led Zeppelin”. The group is commonly known as one of the greatest rock bands of all-time. Educated and expert music critics understand, however, that several of “Zeppelin’s” more famous compositions, (particularly the song “Dazed and Confused”) have strong elements of the blues melodically and harmonically ingrained within the chord progressions.

Playing the blues, music is something that many guitarists aspire to do. Some it comes to easily whereas others find it more difficult. Another thing about the blues music is you either love it or hate it. By the looks of how popular it is, one would have to say that those who hate it are in the minority.

One of the greatest if not the greatest blues singers was B.B.King. Many novices to the guitar marvel at how well he plays them and just how it’s done. To do so you need to learn the 12 bar blues. Don’t give up yet with some perseverance and practice you will master the blues as well.

Have you ever been listening to the blues and just know it reminds you of something? Well it may well do so if you remember the African American slaves from down south. It stems from their local traditions of how they would call out and respond to each other. The majority of blues songs is simply based on this and mimics those sounds. It is the progressive scale.

If you have been following the history of blues music then you have heard the name W.C.Handy. By using the 12 bar blues he was able to produce the very first certifiable blue hit. This is going back some years naturally, since blues has been around for a long time. We’re talking back to the introduction of the “St. Louis Blues” back in 1914.

Interestingly enough at that time the blues wasn’t all that well received it was just ok in the opinion of most. It slowly caught on and almost seemed to have an infectious affect to it.It didn’t matter what the ethnic group was it was being accepted. It really was the African American artist that brought the blues to the forefront. Artists such as Billie Holiday played a big part in this roll. By this time, it was well in the 1930’s. As the 20th century grew to a close, B.B.King added a unique touch to the Blues. Being a lead guitar player, he would bring a different touch to the music with his 12 bars blues techniques. From this point on there was no looking back or cooling off for the blues. It has just continued to grow into popularity, as it is known today.

It revolutionized the aspects of guitar playing. The 12 bars blues is now a commonplace and basic way of the guitar. Anyone aspiring to be good guitar player must learn the essential cord progression.

One of the best ways to learn this technique is through iVideosongs. Here is where you will start the beginning of learning the 12 bar blues, and then by taking what you learn here and making it a practice you will soon be surprised and pleased at how adept you will become.

It just seems to be natural to begin to learn how to play the 12 bar blues the moment one becomes serious about learning to play the guitar. Perhaps because rock includes the 12 bar blues this is the reason.

The first thing you are going to learn is that in order to learn the blues you are going to learn three bars that follow each other in succession.

The first measure is learning how to play a chord. If you are familiar with Presley’s some Hound Dog then you already know what a cord is. Don’t even think about moving onto the next step until you have this one down perfectly.

Now moving onto the second measure does not mean you will not be continuing in the 4/4 time meaning each quarter measure is one beat. The difference here is that in the first measure you were playing in “A” now you will be playing in “D” chord. Once again, become really familiar and comfortable at this measure then get ready to move onto the third and final measure.

Finally, you are here on your last measure and guess what? It’s no different from your first two except now you are going to be playing in “E” chord. That really wasn’t so hard was it? Now it means hours of practice and application to really master these 3 measures to make up the 12 bar blues.

It is not that easy to pull out a definition of blues. You can tell that Robert Johnsons’ Rambling on My Mind or B.B. King’s Everyday I Have the Blues is definitely blues, but what about van Halen, Al Di Meola or Pavarotti’s songs?

Of course, you could define the blues by the call-response structure, the dominant 7th chords, the shuffle rhythm, the I-IV-V progression and things like these, but the most complete definition is one that Eric Clapton himself gave to blues music in an interview in 1998:

My definition of Blues is that it’s a musical form which is very disciplined and structured coupled with a state of mind, and you can have either of those things but it’s the two together that make it what it is. And you need to be a student for one, and a human being for the other, but those things alone don’t do it. (Eric Clapton, 1998)

The Blues History

There are many books on the history of blues. It was born in the 20th century’s Mississippi Delta in the U.S., short after the Civil War. This music style was played by slaves and white people referred to it as sorrow songs, plantation songs or workaday songs. The term blues was used for the first time around 1925.

It is believed that the band leader William Christopher Handy was the one to write the first blues songs in 1909, which was later printed and documented. The song was initially called Memphis Blues and got the name of Mister Crump later. He got his inspiration from a blues song he heard in the Mississippi railway station six years earlier. W.C. Handy wrote other songs too, such as Beale Street Blues or St. Louis Blues and nowadays there’s a blues award named after him – the W.C. Handy Award.

What Do You Need To Learn To Play Blues Guitar?

In order to learn to play blues guitar, there are a few things you need. First of all, you need to own an electric or acoustic guitar with strings made from other than nylon in standard tuning. You also need to know how to read tablature, as well as have some basic guitar knowledge and know how to play a few chords.

You also need some Eric Clapton CDs with blues classics, such as Blues Breakers, From the Cradle or Eric Clapton Unplugged and a good CD player with an auto-repeat shuffle. There’s also a plug-in for Winamp you can use to slow down music. A small chord book you can find in any guitar shop is also handy. But most importantly, in order to learn to play blues guitar, you need some good ears.

If you already have some basic guitar knowledge, you can learn to play blues guitar on your own, with the aid of a simple chord book. However, finding a blues guitar teacher who is willing to help you learn to play blues guitar in your area is definitely a good thing. If you have the time and money to take up private lessons, this will probably help improving your guitar playing skills.

If you want to play Blues guitar there are many different methods to choose from, even hundreds of them. The style has many variations and is the most traditional and well-known forms of music in the world. It would be too difficult to exactly describe how to play blues so instead here are a few tips that may help along in your quest to play a very rewarding and soulful type of music on the guitar.

Play Blues Guitar Tip #1

First off, understand that you don’t have to be the best at technique or know lots of tough cords to play the blues. The best blues sound originates from the heart using your feelings about true life and real situations. Later your technique will improve and you can add more difficult chords to try different variations of the blues but at first just get across the emotions of the song and you will be a good blues player. Remember to play with feeling and the speed will later come.

Play Blues Guitar Tip #2

You have to get used to the rhythm of the blues. A pretty common style is known as a “swung ” feel. Just think of the sound of a heartbeat to guide you along for the beat. Most of the blues as well as other types of music are played in straight 4/4 timing which can be easy to play and is easy on the ear. Once you get comfortable with this style, you’ll be well on your way.

Play Blues Guitar Tip #3

Picking the notes of the blues will get you familiar with the fret board of your guitar. Learning different licks can be great for all types of music but are the heart and soul of the blues.
