The diversity of ethnicities and cultures in Leicester makes it one of the most varied and vibrant cities in the country. The substantial Asian community has brought with it many interesting events which the city enjoys supporting. Complementing the traditional Christian festivities Leicester now also celebrates festivities such as Holi, Diwali, Eid-ul-Fitr and of course the Chinese New Year.

Bars and Pubs:

Partly due to it having two large universities close by the city centre, Leicester city’s bars and clubs are numerous and give a thriving and pulsating feeling to it. Bar and club names can change quite frequently, but this helps to keep the sense of vibrancy in the city in that there is always something new on offer. The Firebug is probably as complete a pub experience as you can get anywhere. The NME student guide for 2005 described it as “A real find for blinding food, beer, tough pub quizzes and lots of live music.” Here there is food to complement the 157 drinks lines they sell, regular live music, access to ‘WiFi’ throughout the premises and Pub Quizzes. Firebug is on Millstone Lane between the Council Offices and the old Town Hall. The Bambu, on the Welford Road below the Council Offices, describes itself as a relaxing café lounge bar blending mystery and sophistication without pretence. The Aqualounge on Wellington Street, more or less opposite the Council Offices is a bar, club and restaurant on 3 floors in one building, with Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights being the club nights. Moving away from the area around the Council offices, in Braunstone Gate, there’s the Loaf which styles itself as a pub to ‘loaf around in’, slow-down, have a drink and let the world go by. If you want a traditional city centre pub, then head for the Globe on Silver Street. Built in 1720 it serves fine draught ales, decent food and has a warm and charming atmosphere.

Restaurants:

There is in Leicester what is known as the ‘Golden Mile’ of Asian food, to which people are drawn from miles around for a truly authentic Asian eating experience. The Golden Mile is centred along the Belgrave Road, leading north out of the city from the Haymarket bus station. Some people would say the nearer to the bus station a place is, the better the restaurant will be. Friends is an award winning Tandoori restaurant with main courses ranging from only £5 to £12. Nearby is Sanjay’s Curry Pot which specialises in the Indian/Portuguese cuisine of the Goa region in India. It is one of the oldest established Asian restaurants in Leicester; prices for a main course are typically between £5 and £13. Moving away from the Belgrave Road and into the city centre, there is the Opera House, which is by the Cathedral in Guildhall Lane. This is well known for its imaginative menus and the sumptuous building in which it is housed. Alongside the market in Hotel Street is The Case, another stylish and contemporary restaurant, which also has a champagne bar in which you can order snacks and light meals. Although technically a bar and restaurant, Mobius, on Braunstone Gate, serves an excellent mix of Mediterranean and Thai cuisine. It’s a relaxing place to eat and produces authentic flavours for the regional food it produces by using only the best produce.

Entertainment:

The De Montfort Hall is probably the best known venue Leicester has, almost a ‘trade-mark’ venue for the city. Built in 1913 and recently refurbished, it can accommodate an audience of 1500 seated or up to 2200 standing. As well as the indoor hall there is an outdoor amphitheatre that can house up to 5000. It has played host to classical, jazz, blues, folk, rock and pop music as well as being a venue for touring musical shows. In recent years it has also been increasingly used for conferences and exhibitions.

The Haymarket theatre in Leicester was one of the well known repertory theatres in the country. Closed at present, a new theatre is currently being built on Halford Street which is due to open in spring 2007. However, complications in the building programme look as if that opening date will now be postponed.

The Phoenix Arts Centre on Newarke Street is a small community venue providing a wide variety of entertainments. It is mainly used for showing films and hosting touring comedy and musical acts. However, it can also be used for theatrical plays and musical productions. There is, of course, a café/bar, which also hosts musical performances.

For live music, apart from at the De Montfort Hall, The Charlotte on Oxford Street is probably the biggest and best known. A fledgling Oasis played here many years ago! This is the venue in Leicester where you’ll first see the up and coming ‘Indie’ bands.

There are currently some 13 nightclubs to choose from in Leicester. Worth mentioning here is the Po Na Na, which apart from its interesting name, is well known for being the place to go for Funk and House music. Two floors with two separate sound systems make this a savvy and party spirited place to be. Po Na Na is in Carey Close near the Jewry Wall.

Leicester has three comedy clubs; Jongleurs (Granby Street), Ship of Fools (using a variety of stages including the Phoenix Arts Centre, and Bottle Rocket (at the Firebug bar).

Merseyside was recently identified as being the region in England that is at the top of the cities’ drinking league. That said there are pubs and bars to suit all comers and all tastes, be it a quiet drink in a local to a boisterous night out in a drinking hall. Restaurants in Liverpool have developed at a rapid pace, with an emphasis on moving up market. Again there is a range of places to eat from the usual fast food and curry houses right up to the very best in gourmet cooking. Those two things combined with a tradition of being the city to go to for musical entertainment, make Liverpool a lively and thriving place for a night out.

Bars and Pubs:
If you are after somewhere to party in one of the large drinking halls that are appearing all over the country, then head for the area around Concert Square and Campbell Square. Many of these bars stay open until 02:00am, but some do have an admission charge after 23:00pm. The Baa Bar on Fleet Street was Liverpool’s first ’style’ bar. Despite now having a lot of competition it retains its position as one of Liverpool’s favourite bars and is often packed out. If it’s summer-time when you’re in Liverpool, have a drink outside on the patio. Hannah’s on nearby Leece Street is popular with the city’s student population. It has a New York bar feel to it and its outdoor patio is also very popular during the summer, but as it’s a covered patio the time of year isn’t too important. Hannah’s is also respected locally for playing good music. The Magnet, on Hardman Street, despite also having a New York feel to it, offers a different type of venue. Spread over two floors, downstairs there are diner style drinking booths with red leather upholstery and a dance-floor, whilst upstairs the bar has a cool and chilled-out ambience. For a truly different drinking experience that is full of style and grace, go to the Philharmonic on Hope Street. Occupying a Grade I listed building opposite the Philharmonic Hall, it was designed by the company that built the Lusitania and the original Queen Elizabeth ocean liners. It still contains many original internal features including its marble toilets, which are listed as a national heritage treasure. Trendy bars in Liverpool include; the Blue Boar which is at the Edward pavilion in Albert Dock. This used to be the favourite place for Liverpool and Everton footballers to relax in. It is said that these days they prefer the private members bar – Baby Blue – which is downstairs. Baby Cream, at the Atlantic Pavilion, is also favoured by the trendy ‘in-crowd’ and is both gorgeous, yet pretentious, in equal measures.

Restaurants:
The London Carriage Works in the Hope Street Hotel is currently the place to be seen if you’re taking someone to dinner. A typical  three course dinner of say scallops, guinea fowl and rhubarb confit will cost you £55, which considering the quality of the food and the standard of  service, is very good. Wines are available from a £15 bottle of house wine, through some very good New World wines and on to a classic selection of French wines in the £40 to £100 range. However, if you’re a wine connoisseur there’s also plenty to choose from right up to the 1986 Pomerol Châteaux Petrus at £850 a bottle. Keith’s Wine Bar on Lark Lane is acknowledged as one of the better mid-price restaurants in Liverpool. Well known for its vegetarian options it has a bohemian and relaxed atmosphere and an excellent choice of wines. Magnet Restaurant, in the Magnet Bar, and the Everyman Bistro on Hope Street both offer a good selection of food at around £7 a meal and wine at prices that will not seriously damage your wealth. Liverpool has a significant Chinese population; two popular Chinese restaurants are Yuet Ben, on Upper Duke Street, which specialises Beijing cuisine and the Far East, on Berry Street, which is one of Liverpool’s oldest Cantonese restaurants.

Entertainment:
As the European City of Culture 2008, Liverpool already has several world class venues in place. The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic orchestra has its own hall capable of seating over 1000 people. The Philharmonic orchestra offers a full programme throughout the year and the concert hall is also used by visiting musicians and artists ranging from poetry readings to tribute bands. The Liverpool Empire is a name just about as famous as the Cavern Club, legendary home of The Beatles, in terms of entertainment in Liverpool. Opened in 1886 as a theatre on Lime Street it has had entertainers such as Frank Sinatra, Julie Andrews and Laurel & Hardy play there. It is now used by touring acts of all types from heavy metal rock to classical opera. The main theatre in Liverpool is The Everyman Theatre and Playhouse , which is on Hope Street, and has productions by its own repertory company and also hosts touring productions. The Everyman is also used for concerts, dance and exhibitions and is always keen to promote local talent.  Liverpool has no shortage of specialist ‘rock’ venues. Although not in the original building, The Cavern Club has an allure all of its own, whilst mainly a venue for local and tribute bands it does also attract some of the big names from the past. There is a Carling Academy in Liverpool which features up and coming as well as established ‘indie’ acts. The Carling Academy is on Hotham Street, Liverpool also has a BarFly Club, which is not far away on Seel Street. If ‘clubbing’ is your thing then you’ll probably be most interested in Nation. Formerly the home of Cream, one of Britain’s best known night-clubs, this venue has a capacity of 3000 and plenty of room to expend some energy. Entry prices vary according to the night of the week, but range from £4 to £13, Nation is on Wolstenholme Square.

1. Bambu 2.0. This glossy café and martini bar, lately opened in the main street of Chinatown. The 4,000-square foot room is a replica of the Bambu Bar at Restaurant Row and is it is hastily gaining popularity.

In the day, Bambu 2.0 accommodate the café crowd along with free WiFi, and converts into a cocktail lounge at night – with $3.50 martinis served all day.

2. Hale Modern Macrobiotic Cuisine. Honolulu’s first fashionable macrobiotic restaurant entirely eliminates the use of refined sugar, taking in organic and local products to the menu as much as likely. While the menu is chiefly vegetarian, there are salmon and fresh fish among the dish as well.

3. Kona Brewing Company in Koko Marina established a fashionable yet relaxed “Liquid Aloha Lounge,” where visitors could lounge at the water’s edge and take bliss in the restaurant’s unique “beer-tinis” that fuse the brewery’s award-winning beers with a variety of liqueurs.

The crowd-pleasing drinks consist of the Strawberry Longboard, Wailua Peach, Porter Passion, and Blue-Wave Martini.

4. Ocean House at Outrigger Reef on the Beach is now unlocked for daily breakfast service.

Ten “Sunrise Specialties” – from Hawaiian frittata to a fluffy Belgium waffles, to a wild berry parfait, to some Ocean House Standard breakfast – made up the normal breakfast menu, with the Sunday Brunch menu presenting many of the “Sunrise Specialties” tributed by a number of “Afternoon Delights,” such as Hibachi Chicken, Roasted Opah Wrap and Blue Crab Cake Sandwich.

5. Pablo McGinty’s is a Mexican and Irish-themed pub and cantina. The menu include conventional Mexican and Irish dishes, as well as modern blends of both cuisines. All handmade in-house using only spanking new ingredients.

Pablo McGinty’s offers a daily pau hana and late night happy hour set of choices with half-off appetizers and some drink specials.

The bar features a full line up of Irish beers; Irish whiskeys; Mexican tequila; Mexican beers and specially made margaritas. Live bands perform on weekends and selected weekdays.

6. Ka Restaurant & Lounge and Paparazzi at Ward Centrein. Ka serves contemporary fusion cuisine in a fashionable atmosphere and offers lunch and dinner from Mondays through Fridays, dinner on Saturday and late night recreation on Friday and Saturday until 2 in the morning. Paparazzi features modern-day décor with an art gallery marking pieces by Joshua Chinsky.

So come and taste the exquisite delicacies that these world class restaurants have got to serve you.

We went on a friday night looking for a nightclub with a cool atmosphere and someone recommended Ace of Clubs Nightclub so we hopped in a cab and $40 later we arrived at Ace of Clubs. When we walked in the door things just didn’t seem our style. It was a little loud and the drinks were kind of pricey. So we went back to our hotel in search of something better.

On the way into the hotel we asked the woman at the desk to recommend a nightclub and she told us to check ploose which I guess is some new nightlife directory that was super easy. We typed in New York City, chose nightclub, and it showed a bunch right on the map. So we picked the closest one that said it had drink specials going on, since we had spent so much on cabs already, we went down and cabbed over to it. When we got there it was EXACTLY like it showed on that ploose site (we had watched a couple video tours so we knew what to expect). We walked in and got a table and bought a bottle of grey goose and had a great time. It was called “The Pink Elephant” (name of the nightclub). We had a great time and went back to our hotel to pass out.

We spent the next day doing touristy stuff, checking out 5th ave, walking all around Manhattan, stopping at a couple restaurants randomly for lunch and by the time night rolled around we were exhausted. We decided we needed something a bit more lowkey so we checked ploose again and found a cool little lounge nearby and decided to check it out. It was called the Sapphire Lounge. It had a really classic decor, kind of like a party in your living room. The red curtains were great! There was this hip DJ there playing some house music and the prices were very reasonable. We highly recommend it.

Sunday came around and we wanted to watch the Football game so we ploosed a nearby sports bar. We found Proof NYC and let me tell you, I was REALLY glad we went there. It had a HUGE TV and Im talking like 8 feet long — this TV was no joke. The bar had hardwood floors and scarlet walls. They had some great beer specials that day as well so we had lucked out. We ordered some food and sipped our drinks enjoying the last day in New York City.

Before we left town for good we had time to stop by a jazz bar called the “Blue Note”. It was one of the best jazz bars Ive been to in the world and to any jazz fans, I recommend it highly. It was at about half or more capacity but not too crowded, decorated beautifully and the featured musicians blew our minds!

In summary, New York City has a VERY wide selection of entertainment selections to offer. Next time we go we will check on the Opera and Broadway and give you our recommendations there.
