I don’t consider John Mayer to be blues (yikes!).
My favorites (the classics) are; B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Little Walter, Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters. They were/are great instrumentalists and had tons of soul. My more contemporary favorites are Stevie Ray Vaughn, Southside Johnny, Johnny Lang and Roomful of Blues. Although ‘Roomful’ swings a bit – they’re more of a big band kind of group, but still have an amazing sound.
Specifically folk/blues I would say:
Mississippi John Hurt
Bukka White
Cephas and Wiggans (probably spelled that wrong)
Blind Blake
Some of Taj Mahal’s stuff

The best for blues: BB King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, robert Cray, buddy Guy, Allman Bros., Dr. John, and a few others. for folk, i guess the best place to start is Bob Dylan.
