What’s the best bar or club in New York?

Hi, I’m in London and I’m going to NYC in the spring to celebrate my 22nd birthday with some mates. I also have a lot of friends in New York so I’m trying to decide on a place where we can all go and people can come meet up with us. I’d prefer more a of a bar/pub to a dance-nightclub and somewhere we could probably stay all night instead of moving onto somewhere else. Any kind of music would be fine (although blues or rock would be great!). I’ve read a little about B.B. King’s Blues Bar in Times Square and that sounds kinda cool. I just want somewhere with a great amosphere so we can all have a good time and enjoy it with whoever else is there. It’s gonna be on a Friday night. Any suggestions for some good places or secret gems?…
If you are looking for somewhere off the beaten path, try out Brother Jimmy’s Bait Shack on 92nd and 3rd (upper east side). Good food, good drinks, and Friday night is usually busy and has a good amount of waitresses dancing on bars (as well as many other beautiful women)…whenever I am in town I always go there.
You will probably get hundreds of recommendations, but it really comes down to what you and your mates are into, where everyone is staying, and how much money you want to spend. New York has everything.
Personally, I would stay away from BB kings or anything else in or near Times Square. Too crowded and touristy. Your NY friends may have some suggestions. Check out Time Out New York online for music listings. There is always a decent concert going on somewhere in the city. To get the info on the bar scene check out http://www.sheckys.com. they have reviews of bars, by geography and category (club/lounge/neighborhood) and its all cross-referenced.
Hope this was helpful. cheers.
