Thomas Jefferson and the Tripoli Pirates – Book Review | Serious Reading

This slim volume recounts the often forgotten war that ensued after newly-elected President Thomas Jefferson refused to pay bribes to the pirates off the northern coast of Africa. But at the same time the United States was a slave nation and the evil horrors of the Atlantic crossing and the evil horrors perpetuated on the survivors were as bad. Slavery was practiced and promoted by bible thumping Americans whose religion justified slavery. American exceptionalism is a dangerous myth. The wars were necessary, gave rise to our Navy and exemplified the fighting spirit and courage that has defined our military. Interesting bit of American history that I admittedly knew little about.
