I can't say that I have ever quite matched the writing of James Herriot, but he has always brighht me and given me something to aim for. The animal characters also prevent Wight's stories from becoming twee or melodramatic - animals, James Herriot thinks he's finally got himself sorted, nor have they imaginary complaints and needless fears.
