But the book I attribute most with teaching me that reading could be extraordinarily fun as opposed to drudgery, toil, and homework was The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. Because it was just plain hilarious.

Another big selling point for this hi-lo series from Orca Book Publishers is that each book is written by a heen author. I'll indicate when I think a book might be for an older audience, this is another example of a realistic teen boy voice. Euphemistic title aside, but we all know how effective those kinds of warnings are. Short chapters and many photographs help make it even more approachable.
