Now the twins are set for a new adventure as the BBC brings them to television for the first time. For author and illustrator Jean Adamson, 84, who created the much-loved stories with her late husband Gareth, the transfer to the screen is a surprise and a delight. I met the children playing Topsy and Tim and they are gorgeous, very sensible and charming. The couple met while studying art and illustration at Goldsmiths College in London. After completing the course Gareth worked with an advertising agency in Northumberland while Jean taught at the college and worked for an animation company in London.

The books did well immediately but you just don't expect things to go on and on! Topsy and Tim would strike out into the new unexplored territory of real life and the main characters, Topsy and Tim. Topsy and Tim have all sorts of new experiences - just like you.

But despite dad using a tablet computer and mum spending time on her laptop, the series - inspired by the hugely popular books and animated TV show of the same name - appears to be stuck in the past. Since the first of 60 episodes aired on November 10, thousands of parents have flocked to internet forum Mumsnet to express their opposition to the show. Most of the outrage is over the way the characters conform to gender stereotypes.
